THE CAKE EATERS
USA, 2007, 95 MIN
DIRECTED BY MARY STUART MASTERSON
Mary Stuart Masterson, star of numerous acclaimed films (Some Kind Of Wonderful, Fried Green Tomatoes, Benny & Joon) as well as made for TV fare (Waterfront, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), makes her narrative feature directorial debut in this small town ensemble drama where the intimate secrets and tensions of two families--the Kimbroughs and the Kaminskis--force them to come to terms with life, love, and death. Offering finely drawn characters and authentic performances, this winner of the People's Choice Award for "Best American Indie" at the 2007 Ft. Lauderdale Film Festival seamlessly weaves together the intertwining lives of the young and old and proves that "coming of age" is not the exclusive domain of the young. The Cake Eaters, with its outstanding cast including Kristin Stewart, Aaron Stanford, Elizabeth Ashley, Bruce Dern, Melissa Leo, Jesse L. Martin, and Jayce Bartok (who also wrote the screenplay), renders a sweet story through its graceful balance of complexity and simplicity.
